Should New Zealand provide military supplies and funding to Ukraine?

On February 24 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War that began in 2014. The invasion caused Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II, with around 7.1 million Ukrainians fleeing the country and a third of the population displaced. It has also caused global food shortages.

If we can afford it then yes, we should be helping countries who are struggling in a war/genocide. We need to think about our ethics as a country and remember who we support and who we SHOULD be supporting and what causes and rights we should be fighting for. However, if this is going to cause damage to our economy or any of the funding that we currently do not have enough of, i think we should just be showing our support and solidarity.

Russia hit energy infrastructure in northern Ukraine in an overnight missile and drone attack and caused a huge fire in the west of the country, resulting in an increase in chlorine levels in the air, Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday.Ukrainian forces shot down three ballistic missiles and 25 of the 26 drones launched in the attack on nine regions across the country, Ukraine's air force commander said.Regional officials in the northeastern Sumy region bordering Russia said an energy facility was hit, causing blackouts for 72 settlements and more than 18,500 consumers.Energy workers rushed to repair the damage, the regional administration said on the Telegram messaging app.Ukrainian energy facilities have come under nearly daily bombardment over the past six months as the war grinds on following Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Zelensky pushes US to allow long-range weapons use in Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged Washington to permit his forces to use US weapons to strike deep inside Russian territory as he looks to increase pressure on Moscow to end the 31-month war.Zelenskyy made the plea on Friday in a meeting with western defence ministers in Germany, underscoring his determination to shift policies in many countries that have barred Kyiv from using their weapons to strike Russia. His visit to Ramstein marked his first time joining the meeting at the air base in person.“We need to have this long-range capability not only on the occupied territory of Ukraine, but also on the Russian territory, so that Russia is motivated to seek peace,” he said at the start of the meeting. The Ukraine contact group is a regular forum to co-ordinate lethal aid to Ukraine.

Biden considers Ukraine’s use of US weapons deep inside Russia

US President Joe Biden has said he is considering a request by Ukraine to use weapons provided by the US to strike deep inside Russian territory. Biden’s admission on Tuesday comes as his government is split over whether to allow the use of US weapons, with the state department, which is more open to Kyiv’s request, pitted against the Pentagon and the US intelligence community. “We’re working that out right now,” Biden said when asked by reporters whether he would allow Ukraine to use American long-range Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, to target sites inside Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly called for restrictions on western-supplied, long-range weapons to be lifted so his military can strike Russian airfields and missile launchers, as well as the ammunition depots, fuel storage and command and control centres that are critical to Moscow’s war.
