Many students are in debt from the living cost allowance, whilst also not receiving any financial help from their parents. It also puts them at a disadvantage to the other students as since the living cost allowance is less than the student allowance, they have to also work many hours to get by, taking them away from time to study and recuperate.

I worked hard to pay off a large student loan I had. I did not have any support from my parents and had to work 22hrs a week while studying. Grades were not as good as they should have been limiting my opportunities after my degree to get into Masters afterwards. Friends with wealthy parents who were self employed showing on the books not earning as much as my parents yet they funded their kids and their kids also got an allowance. Once you are 18 nothing should be based on a parents income. At 18 child support is not paid anymore in split marriages and you are of an age where you can vote. You are classified as an adult and no longer have youth aid.
