The current system assumes that parents over a certain income bracket will support their child through tertiary study but this is not the case for many meaning they cannot start or finish tertiary study. I somewhat agree with this statement, however I believe it runs deeper than this. Yes, allowances should not be based off parental income, but I do not think it should be based off grades. As soon as you add that amount of pressure to students, they will not succeed to the best of their ability. It should be based off who applies, what their reasoning is and if they qualify.

Yes the assumption that parents are willing to financially support the student older than 18yrs is outdated and incorrect.
