At a professional level, or a level where prizes are life-changing (e.g. where a sports-based scholarship might be at stake), transgender athletes should have their own leagues - for example, a trans women's rugby team where all members are trans women (or perhaps just trans people of any gender). Trans and cis women should not be competing for the same records and prizes, because studies show that even after a year on hormone treatments trans women still have certain biological advantages over cis women if the trans women has undergone male puberty. However, their performance after a year on hormone treatments is shown to be reduced compared to men, so it wouldn't be fair on the trans women if they had to compete against men, either, thus the need for trans only leagues.
