They require that student's parents income is below a nonmember that has not been adjusted for the current cost of living crisis we are all facing and means many student's who lie just out of reach of the student allowance are really struggling and falling through the gaps in policy. Students with parents whose salaries lie on the boundary for the student allowance requirement be fully supported by their parents in this current economy and are missing out on the mental and physical relief that a student allowance provides forced instead to work 30ish hours a week to make rent and max out their student loan.
I do think that there are some who take advantage of the way the student allowance requirements are structured (namely children of farmers and other business owners who can structure their income so as to appear to have a small salary) but this should not mean that the majority of us miss out and it is down to policy makers to fix this.
I also think that this policy is a little biased towards large families which while understandable does put only children at another disadvantage which is not always warranted.
Students are really struggling and increasing the minimum combined salary of parents to something that is more adjusted for inflation and realistic in terms of their ability to provide aid to their kid whilst at uni could make all the difference.
Increasing the amount that student can get every week from their student loan is only going to hurt us all in the future when we come to try buy houses etc. if you really wan to help us you will make even a small student allowance more available.
