I remembered when the legal drinking age was dropped from 20 to 18 when I was working for DB Breweries & I know that the majority of my colleagues in the the Liquor Industry at the time thought that was a dangerous move....why: one of the main reasons that was touted at the time for the change was - at 18 you are eligible for the armed forces & can go to war, so you should be allowed to drink & purchase alcohol as well (however we knew that when the drinking age was 20 - 18/19 year olds were sneaking into licensed premises with fake ID's / the same has come to pass now with 16/17 year olds doing the same with no experience of how to control the consumption of alcohol & its side effects!
At least in the army you get the relevant training & support to be an enlisted person but no one prepares you for the issues associated with alcohol consumption & its effects.
So what is my point - it is my understanding that they want to reduce the voting age from 18 to 16 & I think that is too low (like my alcohol example I think we need to protect our young teenagers from themselves & allow them to experience the wonders of youth without all of the issues associated with voting at 16 - yes talk about the process with them at 'college' like all other subjects but don't subject them to unnecessary pressure at this early stage!)
