Should funding for local police departments be redirected to social and community based programs?

“Defund the police” is a slogan that supports divesting funds from police departments and reallocating them to non-policing forms of public safety and community support, such as social services, youth services, housing, education, healthcare and other community resources.

Police need more funding, especially in higher crime rate areas. But social and community-based programs are completely underfunded, and this is a massive detriment to the community. Organizations like Youthline, cannot provide the help that people desperately need because organizations such as these are not receiving the appropriate funding in order to successfully do so.
