Charter schools are tax payer funded K-12 schools that are managed by private companies. In New Zealand charter schools were first allowed for after an agreement between the National Party and the ACT Party following the 2011 general election. The controversial legislation passed with a five-vote majority. A small number of charter schools started in 2013 and 2014 and enroll students who have struggled in the normal state school system. 36 organizations have applied to start charter schools.

I support Charter Schools that will educate children with needs that can't be met in public schools, but public schools should receive more funding.

Private Schools Should Be Allowed As Well As Private Property But Everything Else Should Never Be Privatized
@9G5QQST1yr1Y
Only if created for the needs of Students requiring alternatives and equally funded by public funding
@9G5N7YS1yr1Y
-Should focus on improving our public schools - Quality of teachers -check the competency of teachers and staff in the education ministry -Simple design of curriculum so that any parents can understand
Maybe if they are non profit Don’t know much info about these schools.
No, and we should set a date by which all private schools need to become part of the public system.
@9F5NGW91yr1Y
I support charter schools, and we should also improve public schools and increase teachers wages
Yes and education should not be privatized
@9D6YDC91yr1Y
Yes, but only if they are non-profit and secular.
@9D4TSBV1yr1Y
I agree with focusing on improving public schools and teachers wages, but also think we need more publicity funded schools with high teacher ratios for the really troubled kids who are dropping out and committing crimes/sinking into addictions and apathy, or are really disruptive in schools to the point other kids' education is being impacted as well as their own. We need a LOT of these to rescue the disengaged kids who are about to become a huge societal burden if they aren't turned around, and for the rest of the kids and teachers still trying to learn in regular public schools.
@993LGGH2yrs2Y
The education system needs an overhaul.
In general I think all schools should be run by the state and entirely separated from religion in particular. I also think we should avoid Elitist private schools like Eton College that produced Boris Johnson and others.
Yes, but only if they are non-profit and non-exclusionary.
@9DSF5Y81yr1Y
I’m unsure what this means
@9DKLLJG1yr1Y
Education system needs huge uphaul to stay relevant and useful for tamariki and teachers supported better
Maybe, if they are not-for-profit, or have a limit on profit/fair pricing for students, but we should focus on improving public schools and increasing teacher wages.
Yes but they should make it so them work with community’s to improve. Also have company’s on board to help them into job training befor Le they leave. Like building. Start doing basic skills for apprenticeships.
@9FWVPBS1yr1Y
Generally, no but I can see that, if NZ does not reflect the Treaty of Waitangi adequately in education, charter schools could provide a healthier option.
@8TFFCG64yrs4Y
I'm unsure of what charter schools are
@8H53YBQ4yrs4Y
Teacher wages should be increased significantly
@8GL3QBT4yrs4Y
yes. i support charter schools but i believe our public school system needs a lot of work.
@TravellingFOOT4yrs4Y
Yes, but we should focus on improving our public schools and increasing teachers wages
@9CCDY7P2yrs2Y
Yes but I believe that it should be capped on how expensive they are, you should only be paying for boarding, not the education
@8G8FVL54yrs4Y
Yes as long as they have qualified teachers & a good curriculum
@8ZXFKLL3yrs3Y
Somewhere in the middle for me. I think there is a place for charter schools but also believe public school teachers are under-resourced and underpaid.
@9CHMF4Z2yrs2Y
Schools should be a learning foundation for all students. The national standard of education should be tailored specifically for each students ability to learn. Each student will benefit from gaining experience beneficial to their own growth. That way no student is stuck on trying to ascend with every year that education is thrown at them. Instead they excell at their own pace, exceedingly quicker or extremely slow nonetheless they are able to benefit from the education system and find a suitable career without feeling left behind or having to fall back.
@982S32T2yrs2Y
No, we should be supporting more alternative education Primary schools where main stream does not suit the child. Hands on schools, but with underlying standard curriculum.
