Public transport is unreliable and expensive in New Zealand cities right now, and making it more expensive will only impact people who are wanting to care for the environment or cannot afford a car. We need public transport to link all through NZ with the same card to hop on and off no matter where you are but it should not be privatised (we need to avoid a monopoly)

 @9FCMF22Labourdisagreed…8mos8MO

For our cities to work effectively it needs a robust and economic public transport syste - it should be a service not a business

 @9FCNPH6Labourdisagreed…8mos8MO

Having better public transport will fix other issues in New Zealand’s if money was to be spent on it

 @9F98X52Opportunitiesdisagreed…8mos8MO

Underfunding of public transportation is a policy decision which will fail to support the changing nature of environmentally sustainable urban centres, instead incentivising unsustainable and increasingly inaccessibly private car ownership. In addition, privatisation will lead to cost-cutting on the part of private companies, and hence inadequate services and poor working conditions for employees.

Public transport is a vital public service that should be accessible to all regardless of ability and income. It's a necessary move as we are in a climate crisis.

 @9FCJJC4Nationaldisagreed…8mos8MO

Privatizing public transport services means that these companies will treat the service as a business (as they should). The trouble is, public transport isn't meant to be the money maker. It's meant to be the thing that enables other people to get to work.

 @9FB27JYGreendisagreed…8mos8MO

We need more people taking public transport in order to increase our effective climate change response this is not possible by privatizing public transport as private services will want to make more money

 @9FCHS8SNationaldisagreed…8mos8MO

Public transport is too expensive as is, privatising these essential services will only make the services more costly for those who need them.

 @9F9F2WWNationaldisagreed…8mos8MO

Yes, we need more government funded transportation to reduce road use, particularly for freight transport.

 @9F99DN6Nationaldisagreed…8mos8MO

Privatization can encourage competitors with urgency to improve on what is currently an awful public transport operation in NZ. People need reliable, efficient, but most importantly affordable ways to get around. We need a service that gives everyone a safe, cheap, low-emission way to get around, especially when transport currently makes up almost 20% of the country's emissions.

 @9F963WWLabourdisagreed…8mos8MO

We need to provide affordable public transportation to create a critical mass for our public transport system which will improve the level of funding going into our transport network and therefore the extent and quailty of the system overall.

 @9FB5R58disagreed…8mos8MO

NZ doesn't have a big enough population to support privatization of public transport ... We've had a number of competing bus companies throughout the years, but they "run out of gas" due to not enough public support.

 @9F4XQGRGreendisagreed…8mos8MO

People are required to work within a city in order to afford basic human needs, they should not have to Pay for public transport to get to work in order to afford their basic needs

 @9F8F9M7Labourfrom California disagreed…8mos8MO

Privatization of public transport will not serve the public good. The infrastructure and an effective public transportation system requires government support, management, and funding.

 @9F7N4V5Greendisagreed…8mos8MO

Public transportation is cheaper, benefiting lower income people without harming the rich. it's also much more environmentally friendly.

 @9F8J367Māoridisagreed…8mos8MO

People need reliable, efficient, but most importantly affordable ways to get around. At the end of the day, privatisation focusses on the bottom line; it should be a public service that gives everyone a safe, cheap, low-emissions way to get around, especially when transport currently makes up almost 20% of the country's emissions.

 @9FHN9PPGreendisagreed…8mos8MO

First, public transport is a great aid to reducing carbon emissions by privately owned vehicles by allowing people to use public transport as alternatives, not to mention it is essential for this who can’t afford private transport, and also reduces road risk with less drivers on the road. Increased spending on public transport is necessary because at present, it is quite insufficient and unreliable especially when trying to make it to important appointments in time, it also increases the transport time by roughly 50% which usually means that it is preferable to simply drive one’s…  Read more

Public transport should be used for everyone because it is literally PUBLIC transportation. People need it to get around, doing this would turn New Zealand into a car-based country like the U.S.A.

 @9F8D46DGreendisagreed…8mos8MO

The current state of affairs and privatised public transport is a bit of a joke. Services are unreliable and miscommunicated. Take London for example, according to regular users the variation in services is far too broad after switching to privatised public transport

 @9F89R6Zdisagreed…8mos8MO

 @9F7MPLZNew Zealand Firstdisagreed…8mos8MO

Privatisation only works well short term for anything where there are lots of competitors. However eventually only a few companies end up with all the businesses and can charge whatever they think people will pay for the service which will always be more than the basic cost of running the business. A government run business only needs to recur costs.

 @9FGWLNNGreendisagreed…8mos8MO

Would be a disaster - would reduce ability for several low income families to get to school, work etc and would be worse off for the environment.

 @9FD29YSdisagreed…8mos8MO

Privatizing public transport, and the lack of increased government spending on public transport will worsen the traffic and economic issues we face with travel in everyone's lives.

 @9FB89YWGreendisagreed…8mos8MO

Making the public transport more private will make it less accessible to the general public and it will get used less, following on from that this will cause an increase in traffic and emissions from more vehicles being used.

 @9F9QPG9Greenfrom British Columbia disagreed…8mos8MO

No public transportation needs to be a public service, not run like a business with a focus on profit.

 @9F97RSRNationaldisagreed…8mos8MO

Would provide more options and having a business involved encourages growth rather than the government paying for any losses financially.

 @9FC5XBB disagreed…8mos8MO

Privatisation means less control by government and therefore could increase cost of travel to users eg risk of increased costs due to monopoly

 @9FCLSV5agreed…8mos8MO

Privatization of public transportation services will free up funds for the government to put the proper infrastructure in place that is needed to cope with the speedily growing population, particularly in East Auckland. If the roads and speed limits were appropriate for the level of commuters this would drastically improve the efficiency of the public transportation services.

 @9F7GZM7Greendisagreed…8mos8MO

Public transport is horrible and expensive in New Zealand cities right now, and making it more expensive for the low earning person would make congestion in cities much worse

 @9F77JF3Greendisagreed…8mos8MO

The government needs to supply public transport for all. It is vital for all not a profit making exercise.

 @9F6PW2XGreendisagreed…8mos8MO

Public transport needs to be focused on the traffic and emissions due to the lack of public transport is ridiculous

 @9F6JFYLACT disagreed…8mos8MO

Public transportation needs to be a service, not a profitable business, if a ride on a bus is too expensive then it defeats the purpose on reducing carbon emissions.

 @9F66L8HNationaldisagreed…8mos8MO

we should give more transport to te people who needed more. example. wheelchair people. boys with crutches and people with drugs problems who wants to leave the drugs but its difficult to them.

 @9F5RHJFLabourdisagreed…8mos8MO

Public Transportation needs to prioritise making reliable, efficient and readily available services ahead of profit- privatising puts this at risk. If public transport services are not invested in enough or charged too much due to pressure for profit, this pushes more people on to the roads instead, creating costs of road upkeep and environmental impacts of car emissions

 @9F5FK7Hdisagreed…8mos8MO

Public transport should be for the public benefit not to make shareholders profits. It does require tax payer funding, particularly to build it in the first place but it is ultimately better for our cities and our citizens

 @9F5D2MYLabourdisagreed…8mos8MO

This is the only thing to incentivise people to use public transport and help the environment. In the long term if public transport is not incentivised then it will have negative effects on the economy having to fix issues in the future

 @9F4V48Rdisagreed…8mos8MO

Privatization of a sector isost effective when it's sufficiently viable and profitable to support competition. Competition in the industry then motivates innovation and efficiency. Going straight to privatization of public transport, before it's more integral to the Kiwi lifestyle, will sound its death knoll.

 @9F6CW2YOpportunitiesdisagreed…8mos8MO

Public transportation services provide a means to reduce congestion, emissions & low-cost transport. Congestion makes people angry. Emissions ruin the planet. Low-cost transport makes the world more equal.

 @9F52SVZGreendisagreed…8mos8MO

Free public transportation will encourage more people to use it and lower carbon emission across New Zealand

 @9FB497NGreendisagreed…8mos8MO

One of the main arguments for privatization is that it will introduce competition and encourage companies to drive down their costs and innovate.
Public transport relies heavily on public infrastructure. Why would we want to privatize our train lines or the trains that use them? It would result in short term decision making based on profit margins instead of long term investment in the required infrastructure or hardware required to run an effective service.
Public transport is for the good of the entire community, privatizing it results in all the wrong incentives and reduces the quality…  Read more

Private companies will prioritise profits over the social utility of public transport, creating less effective services that don't maximise the effeciient movement of people for various purposes

 @9F8KJYVdisagreed…8mos8MO

This will likely increase the cost of public transport and unless we can get a cohesive system will lead to confusion

 @9FC473QGreendisagreed…8mos8MO

Disagree we should not privitise public transport as it allows private companies to provide a terrible service

 @9FB3GJLNationaldisagreed…8mos8MO

With privatisation of public transport may result in higher rates in which people have to pay to use it. Also the money from a service such as transport should go to the government to use to either maintain a good system or put to use in other sectors that need it. Private companies will be the only ones benefitting from the money we pay to use public transport. It should go back to the people
