Artificially ring fencing towns and cities to prevent supply of land is the single biggest impact affecting rise in house prices and pricing young people out of the market.

We need to do both, big apartment buildings would help a lot instead of building more 4 bedroom houses in the suburbs, but we do still need more land available to expand into and decrease demand.

This only applies in certain areas, high density. Or where there is accessible public transport, so tenants aren’t requiring parking or garages. There also needs to be adequate play areas and community centres for families in the area.

I don’t have a counter argument as I believe that building up is the most logical decision regarding increasing housing, especially social housing.

Building up helps but is not the fix all. There needs to be a balance between building up and sprawling.

Building large apartment buildings minimises the cost and material usage for the same amount of housing as individual houses would cost, making them more sustainable.

Regardless of your views on sustainability, building outwards instead of upwards makes traffic worse and decreases the amount of land available for productive uses. Most people living in an apartment in the CBD would be able to walk everywhere, so would not require a car to commute across town on a daily basis.

There are many unexplored design solutions to housing that will not chew into the use of land supply. we could try some new ideas rather than doing what we have always done.
