Under 18s don’t have the general understanding or experience with day to day financial decisions needed to make an informed decision.

 @9FC4PZBcommented…2yrs2Y

Neither do some people with dementia or intellectual disability but they are allowed to vote but a number of 16 year olds do have financial literacy.Finances are only one subset of issues that we vote for. There are many other issues .

 @9F8HTNQACTdisagreed…2yrs2Y

18 in itself is to young to make an informed decision. The youth would be more inclined to vote for what is 'woke' instead of serious fundamental flaws in our society.

 @9F9BKZZLabourcommented…2yrs2Y

if you are too stupid to know the difference between to, too and two…..you have no serious claim to comment on who should be eligible to vote!

 @9FDWTKSdisagreed…2yrs2Y

A lot of people are already infective on who they will vote for and are easily persuaded by social experiences on who to vote for and under 18s are very unlikely to take part or show interest in politics.

 @9F8HGNXNationaldisagreed…2yrs2Y

Because they have no life experience, and at that age most teenagers think they know everything, the brain hasn't matured enough to be able to have a say in who runs the country

 @9F9BKZZLabourdisagreed…2yrs2Y

Oh, just stop it! How much has life experience really helped things. Old men running our countries hasn’t been particularly beneficial in the past. I’d rather see some young people expressing their opinions and running the country, after all it’s going to be their home long after we have gone and they may be less susceptible to the “no that’s mine” culture that a lot of us older kiwis vote for!

 @9F98C29Labourdisagreed…2yrs2Y

personally i think old people shouldn't be able to vote, they are brain dead and probably have dementia. like you.

 @9FPGVBFNew Zealand Firstfrom Nagasaki  disagreed…2yrs2Y

if people are not old enough to drink, then why should they be responsible enough to vote. Also although some young people have a much better idea of politics than older people a lot of younger people don't care about politics.

 @9FD29M3Labourdisagreed…2yrs2Y

18 is the youngest it should ever be. They cant drink until 18. Most of their views younger than that would be their parents views, they need to be mature enough to have.their own views.

 @9F96PG7disagreed…2yrs2Y

Their brains have not yet fully developed and so are still learning and developing. They have high ideals but no idea of consequences further down the track.

 @9FB8XDCdisagreed…2yrs2Y

Kids under 18 that do not work, do not pay taxes or have any undserstanding of working politics will vote emotionally or as influenced by their peers or families.

 @9FDWZPTNationaldisagreed…2yrs2Y

16 year olds have no sense of political or national issues and will vote based on feeling rather than knowledge

 @9F89WHTdisagreed…2yrs2Y

Most 16 year olds haven't even had a job yet, and not enough life experience in order to make a considered choice.

 @9F67W5MNationaldisagreed…2yrs2Y

Younger people are more likely to be influenced, and also it might put a lot of pressure and stress on the child.

 @9FKBVR9Greenagreed…2yrs2Y

With x% of New Zealand era aged 18-25 leaving for opportunities overseas, we need to boost their feeling of participation in shaping the country's future.

 @9FGPML9Nationaldisagreed…2yrs2Y

education around politics is not of common interest to people under the age of 18 and so their votes would likely go to the same party as their parents or friends because they have nothing to lose, and so this devalues the vote of the people that the government and its laws effect.

 @9FHNFCSTe Pāti Māoriagreed…2yrs2Y

There's 4 years between voting. It should be lowered. Those who are 16 in an election year, will be 20 by the time they can vote. That's 4 of their potential working years. They should be able to have a say on what will affect their immediate future

 @9FGQWBXGreenagreed…2yrs2Y

it gives the younger people a chance to decide what they want to happen in their futer and what they want to see changed.

 @9FFMCKJLabourdisagreed…2yrs2Y

They don’t have enough life experience and are at a time in there life where so much is going on that to add the weight of politics may be infair on the majority of young people.

 @9FFL6JXLabourdisagreed…2yrs2Y

"Lowering the voting age might not be such a good idea. Some people say that younger folks like us might not know enough about important stuff in life yet. They worry that we might make choices without really thinking about the big consequences.

Also, it's kind of weird that different things have different age rules. Like, you can't drink or drive until you're older, but they want us to vote when we're younger. It's confusing, right?

Some folks are worried that people might try to trick us or use fancy talk to get us to vote a certain way. They think we might not…  Read more

If there are extremely intellectual people out there under 18, they deserve a vote! People should be allowed to vote if they meet the following requirements:
1. They are either over 18 or
2. Their school reports have 80% or more as their average for Politics.

 @9FB4JJ4Greendisagreed…2yrs2Y

When younger people pay taxes and not rely on their parents then they are their own people. Their thoughts will be influenced by their family otherwise

 @9FJSY5BLabourdisagreed…2yrs2Y

I think many of our age based laws base adult as 18 and lowering that again seems like it will end up lowering more things like drinking age etc. Perhaps if you are turning 18 in an election year, you should be able to vote.

 @9F9FJYDNationaldisagreed…2yrs2Y

If you can’t be deemed mature enough to have the understanding and mental capacity to be trialed as an adult after committing a crime then by the same notion you can’t have the capacity or maturity to make decisions on the future of a country
