New Zealand currently does not have enough resources to deal with a nuclear energy explosion. As much as people have regulations and H&S procedures, there is still a risk of human error that may cause a disaster. Another thing to consider is the environment. We have seen it deteriorate significantly over the past few years particularly in our waterways and marine life activity. The other aspect is the cost. It will cost billions to set up and use nuclear energy. Considering our country is massively in debt due to the unavoidable events recently, I don’t think this is the best thing to spend money on.

Most of our energy needs are already fulfilled by renewable sources that don't have any chance of bringing a huge negative impact to the environment.

Chernobyl - when things go wrong there is no easy clean up. Even when things go well where are all the waste products put "outside the environment" for the next million years? who is paying for this?
Accidents can & do sometimes happen despite the best of preventative measures. & NZ could not cope with a Nuclear disaster.
