Charta školy sú K-12 školy financované daňovými poplatníkmi, ktoré sú spravované súkromnými spoločnosťami. Na Novom Zélande boli najprv povolené charterové školy po dohode medzi národnou stranou a stranou ACT po všeobecných voľbách v roku 2011. Kontroverzné právne predpisy boli schválené väčšinou piatich hlasov. Malé množstvo charterových škôl sa začalo v rokoch 2013 a 2014 a zapisovali študentov, ktorí bojovali v bežnom školskom systéme. Na začatie charterových škôl požiadalo 36 organizácií.
