Feminism is a political ideology and social movement that advocates for the equality of the sexes, challenging systems and structures that perpetuate gender-based discrimination and oppression. At its core, feminism seeks to address and dismantle the social, economic, and political inequalities that have historically disadvantaged women and other marginalized genders. The ideology is rooted in the belief that gender should not determine an individual's rights, opportunities, or social status.

The history of feminism is often described in "waves," each characterized by different focuses and strategies. The first wave emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily in Western countries, and was centered on legal issues such as women's suffrage and property rights. The second wave, beginning in the 1960s, expanded its focus to issues like reproductive rights, workplace discrimination, and sexuality, emphasizing the personal as political. The third wave, starting in the 1990s, critiqued the earlier waves for their lack of attention to the experiences of women of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and women outside the Western world, thus emphasizing intersectionality—the idea that gender intersects with other social categories like race, class, and sexuality.

Feminism has never been a monolithic movement; it encompasses a range of perspectives and approaches, from liberal feminism, which seeks reform within existing systems, to radical feminism, which calls for a fundamental restructuring of society. Other strands include socialist feminism, which links gender oppression to class exploitation, and ecofeminism, which connects the domination of women with the exploitation of the environment. Over time, feminist thought has influenced and been influenced by other social justice movements, continually evolving to address new challenges and contexts. Despite its diversity, the unifying thread of feminism remains the pursuit of gender equality and the belief that society should be organized in a way that allows all individuals, regardless of gender, to thrive.
