A sweeping global study has found that children who receive smartphones before the age of 13 face significantly higher risks of mental health problems, including depression, aggression, low self-worth, and even suicidal thoughts as they grow older.
Researchers surveyed nearly 2 million people across more than 160 countries and consistently found that early smartphone ownership is associated with poorer mental health outcomes in both boys and girls, with girls being particularly vulnerable. The study highlights that early exposure to social media and excessive screen time can disrupt sleep, emotional regulation, and social development. Experts are urging parents to delay giving smartphones to children until at least age 13 and to limit screen time for younger kids.
The findings have sparked renewed calls for school smartphone bans and stricter parental controls to protect children's mental well-being.
