A Turkish court has jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu pending trial on corruption and terrorism-related charges.
Imamoglu, a key political rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated. His detention has triggered the largest protests in Turkey in over a decade, with thousands rallying nationwide against what they see as an attack on democracy. Prosecutors have also sought the detention of several of his aides.
The case is expected to have significant political implications ahead of Turkey’s upcoming elections.
