People on an income benefit generally come from poverty, unstable households and are more likely to have pre-existing substance abuse issues. We should create more routes of drug rehab and aid for these people as opposed to continuing to punish them.
People that apply for a benefit genuinely do need it and are in the position they are in because of wider socio-economic issues that the government continues to avoid.
Drug use should first be criminalised and a more robust and accessible support system for individuals with addiction should be invested in from funds divested from prisons.
Removing the accessibility of government jobs in financially depressed townships where support systems are overburdened or inaccessible will only fuel addiction and reliance on welfare.
