The state has no right to test anyone's drug taking. It's a complete invasion of privacy and bodily autonomy. It is also social coercion on already disadvantaged groups, beneficiaries need assistance, not coercion.
@9FDWH8J7mos7MO
I don't do drugs and would find it absolutely humiliating to be tested just for being on a disability benefit. That's gross.
@9FB8S4GDemocracyNZ7mos7MO
No because these people who are being tested for drugs obviously have a deeper problem free counselling and medical care may help these people diagnose their problems rather than be cut off from any funding possible due to there addiction which they need support for

I would like to also point out that I think the welfare system in new Zealand works well on paper but has some serious real world flaws...sickness benefit is a great idea but there are people out there who take advantage of it also administration costs and unnecessary costs make the system very inefficient.
It's not anyone's business but the police. Addiction is a mental problem and people need more help but it's upto the police to do something about it if the person does not want to get help or get better.

Freedom of choice, it punishes their dependants and family members, increases crime and is no one's business.
Drug dependency is a sickness if you remove support from those who need it you are not addressing the cause of the problem.
Removal of welfare is not an effective disincentive to take drugs
Preventing social welfare for individuals who have a positive test of drugs is problematic because an addiction to drugs is a health issue and therefore preventing social welfare will prevent them from getting to a point where they can have a better life and possibly overcome said addiction and will instead probably leave them in a worse position of having a drug addiction with less money to support themselves
Someone smoking weed, doing psychedelics or mdma should not be punished considering alcohol is of much higher harm and is decriminalised. Someone can be highly functional while occasionally using some of these drugs. Welfare should be a human right - what if someone couldn't access food because they'd been offered a joint at a party?

The two are mutually exclusive. The state cannot dictate to the individual HOW to spend their money once it is given to them. This further disempowers the individual and takes away their rights to choose how to live their own life without state interference. This is still a democracy no matter if we agree with an individuals choice or not.
