In 2019 there were 12,857 babies murdered in New Zealand (stats.govt.nz). However, the the surrounding circumstances that lead up to a woman or girl choosing to end her babies life is what needs to be addressed. Abortion is the result of emotional issues, not physical and the decision made by a female is never a light one. Women only choose this option as a second choice because they feel that the first choice to keep, love, and nurture their baby is not an option, for many varied reasons, and yet underlying every situation is that the man who impregnated her is somehow failing to provide the safety and support that she needs to make the decision to keep her baby. So before a decision can be made, there needs to be a lot more ground work in women and girls being empowered to say no to sex, and in the event of a pregnancy, to say no to abortion. These are the two most important factors to change the mentality surrounding abortion.
