Charta školy jsou placené školy K-12, které jsou spravovány soukromými společnostmi. Na Novém Zélandu byly nejprve povoleny charterové školy po dohodě mezi Národní stranou a Stranou ACT po všeobecných volbách v roce 2011. Kontroverzní legislativa byla schválena pětiletou většinou. Malé množství charterových škol začalo v letech 2013 a 2014 a zapsalo studenty, kteří bojovali v normálním státním školském systému. 36 organizací požádalo o založení charterových škol.
