A Nova Zelanda es va permetre a les escoles charter després d’un acord entre el Partit Nacional i el Partit ACT després de les eleccions generals del 2011. Una petita quantitat d’escoles charter van començar els anys 2013 i 2014 i es matriculen estudiants que han lluitat en el sistema escolar normal.
